The Ultimate 72-Hour Oxford Weekender (For the Culture & Cocktail Obsessed)

Category: Guides

Hey everyone, Alyssa here! If you think Oxford is just dusty old books, stressed-out students, and impenetrable stone walls, I am about to completely rewrite your itinerary.

Don't get me wrong, the dark academia vibes are absolutely real (and totally gorgeous), but Oxford has quietly evolved into one of the UK’s sleekest weekend getaways. We are talking secret cocktail bars, rooftop views, and boutique hotels that will make your Instagram grid pop.

Whether you're planning a romantic escape or a long overdue girls' trip, grab your weekender bag. Here is your ultimate, meticulously curated 72-hour guide to doing Oxford right.

🧳 Where to Crash

Ditch the boring chain hotels. If you're coming to Oxford, you need to stay somewhere with a story (or at least a really good spa).

  • Malmaison Oxford: Yes, you are reading this right—you can literally sleep in a converted Victorian prison. Don't worry, the original cells have been transformed into incredibly cozy, luxurious rooms. You can grab dinner at their Chez Mal Brasserie and sip creative cocktails at the Malbar before serving your "sentence."
  • The Store Oxford: If plush, modern luxury is more your speed, this is the spot. Located right on Broad Street, it perfectly blends history with high-end comfort. Think stunning rooftop views, a gorgeous spa to unwind in, and the perfect central base for exploring the city.

🍸 Day 1: Arrive & Vibe

4:00 PM | Check-In & Chill Drop your bags, freshen up, and hit the historic streets. The city center is incredibly walkable, so take an hour just to wander, grab a coffee, and soak in those famous dreaming spires.

7:00 PM | NYC Meets Oxford For your first night, we are keeping the energy high. Head over to the Westgate rooftop to hit up Dirty Bones Oxford. This place serves up serious NYC-inspired comfort food alongside killer cocktails and old-school hip-hop beats. It’s the perfect, relaxed atmosphere to officially kick off the weekend.

9:30 PM | Cocktails with a View Just a few steps away on the same rooftop, transition your evening over to Victors Oxford. The aesthetic here is unreal—it’s a Hamptons-inspired haven dripping in wisteria. Grab a table under the floral ceiling, order some small plates to share, and sip on their inventive cocktails while looking out over the city skyline.

🛶 Day 2: Sights & Sips

10:00 AM | Get Your Culture Fix You can't come to Oxford and not do a little sightseeing. Start your morning at the Bodleian Library. It is genuinely the UK's literary treasure. Exploring these historic halls and vast collections feels like stepping straight into a movie set (because, well, it literally has been one).

12:30 PM | Punting on the Cherwell Grab some sandwiches and head down to the Magdalen Bridge Boathouse. Hiring a punt is an absolute Oxford rite of passage. Glide along the serene River Cherwell—you can hire a chauffeur if you don't trust your own steering skills—and take in the stunning architecture from the water.

2:30 PM | A Botanical Escape Once you're back on solid ground, take a short stroll to the University of Oxford Botanic Garden. It's a gorgeous spot for nature lovers, featuring literary trails, stunning glasshouses, and over 5,000 plant species.

8:00 PM | Bombay Nights For dinner, we are heading to the Dishoom Permit Room Oxford. Located on New Inn Hall Street, this place completely nails the vibrant spirit of 1970s Bombay. The Indian cuisine is out of this world, the space is art-filled and lively, and they have DJ nights that perfectly bridge the gap between dinner and a night out.

🥐 Day 3: Recovery & Roaming

10:30 AM | The Hangover Cure If you indulged a little too much at Dishoom, do not panic. Make your way to The Breakfast Club. With its vibrant 80s-inspired vibe, this is the ultimate spot for all-day breakfast comfort food. Plus, it’s got rooftop views and eclectic decor that will instantly revive you. (Rumor has it there's even a secret cocktail bar if you need some hair of the dog!).

1:00 PM | Walk It Off Before you pack up and head home, you need to see Oxford's wilder side. Take a walk out to Port Meadow. This unploughed gem has a 4,000-year history and is a completely different vibe from the cobbled city center. It’s a massive, serene expanse of nature where you can walk off your brunch alongside wildflowers, vibrant birdlife, and free-roaming horses.

Oxford is waiting for you, and it is looking better than ever. Book the train, pack your favorite outfits, and get ready for a weekend you won't forget!
