Situated conveniently on the High Street at the historic Magdalen Bridge, the Magdalen Bridge Boathouse is your gateway to the quintessential Oxford experience of punting on the River Cherwell. Here, you can hire traditional hand-crafted punts, as well as rowing boats and pedalos, for an hour or even an entire day of leisurely exploration on the water. Whether you choose to navigate yourself or opt for a chauffeured punt, you'll be partaking in a beloved pastime that has been enjoyed by students, residents, and visitors for generations. The boathouse operates seven days a week from February to November, weather permitting, ensuring ample opportunity to create lasting memories.
As you gently glide south from the boathouse, a picturesque journey unfolds before you, passing Oxford's renowned Botanic Gardens, the UK's oldest, and the tranquil grounds of Magdalen College. Continue your voyage through Christ Church Meadows, an area steeped in history and literary inspiration, famously associated with Lewis Carroll. The route also offers views of St Hilda's College gardens and the beautiful rose gardens of Magdalen School. For those feeling more adventurous, the river eventually leads towards the Isis, Oxford's name for the River Thames, opening up even more stunning natural scenery to enjoy.

This part of Oxford feels completely different from the academic side — it’s quieter, greener, and more relaxed.
I walked along the riverside near Magdalen Bridge and saw people punting slowly along the water. The sound of the water, birds, and trees made it feel far away from city life, even though I was only a few minutes from the colleges.
I didn’t go punting myself this time, but just watching the boats glide past was peaceful. The houses, gardens, and old bridges along the water give this area a storybook feel.
It’s also a great place to take photos or just sit and rest for a while.
If you have a few hours in Oxford, I highly recommend walking around this area — especially in the afternoon or early evening.
It’s one of those places where you don’t have to do much — just being there is enough.
Beautiful and peaceful view of pure greenery! Fearless ducks 😂 come really close. Absolutely amazing experience
