Original cells in the converted Victorian prison at Malmaison Oxford now serve as uniquely luxurious guest rooms, blending their storied past with contemporary comfort and free Wi-Fi. Situated within the historic Oxford Castle Quarter, this boutique hotel retains many original features of the former prison, including thick walls and cell doors, offering a captivating atmosphere mere steps from the city's famed university colleges and museums. Guests consistently praise the hotel for its distinctive character, comfortable rooms, and the intriguing experience of staying where history has been dramatically reimagined. The building itself was even used as a filming location for "The Italian Job," adding another layer to its fascinating narrative.
Beyond the remarkable accommodation, Malmaison Oxford invites you to indulge in its elegant Chez Mal Brasserie and the hip Malbar cocktail lounge, both located in the atmospheric basement which once formed part of the prison. The brasserie offers a menu of classic and seasonal dishes, with a focus on prime British beef and fresh, local ingredients, while the neon-lit bar is renowned for its creative cocktails and extensive wine list. Whether you're seeking a romantic dinner, a casual lunch, or a sophisticated evening drink, these vibrant spaces provide a memorable backdrop. With its central location, the hotel serves as an excellent base for exploring Oxford's historic sites, including the Ashmolean Museum and Bodleian Library, all within easy walking distance.

The highlight of my stay, though, was the bar experience, thanks to the incredibly talented mixologist, Sam. His creativity and passion for cocktails were unmatched! Sam crafted us some of the most delicious and inventive drinks from the extensive cocktail menu, each one a masterpiece. He was friendly, engaging, and took the time to chat about his craft, making the evening feel special.
The staff were warm and attentive throughout. The hotel’s location in the Castle Quarter is unbeatable—steps from Oxford’s shops, and restaurants. My stay in Cell Room 128 was a perfect blend of history, luxury, and exceptional service, elevated by Sam’s mixology magic. Unique experience waking up in jail on my birthday......for me anyway!!! Five stars all the way.
