Ashtanga Yoga follows a set sequence of postures that are performed in the same order every time. There are
six series
:
Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa)
– “Yoga therapy”; focuses on detoxifying and aligning the body.
Vinyasa” means the
linking of breath and movement
. Each posture is connected by a flowing movement and synchronized with the
ujjayi breath
(a controlled, rhythmic breathing technique).
This creates a
moving meditation
, generating internal heat to
cleanse and purify the body
.
Ashtanga focuses on three key elements:
Asana (postures)
– Physical poses for strength, flexibility, and balance
Pranayama (breath control)
– Ujjayi breath maintains focus and energy
Drishti (gaze point)
– A focused gaze in each pose that encourages inward awareness
Together, these help calm the mind and
discipline the senses
.
