Two 19th-century manor houses, nestled within three acres of tranquil gardens, form the heart of the Mercure Oxford Hawkwell House Hotel. This newly refurbished hotel presents a unique blend of historical charm and modern sophistication, with interiors stylishly inspired by classic Oxford fashion, such as the iconic brogue and collar. Guests can unwind in refined rooms featuring free WiFi, rainfall showers, and unique vintage-inspired decor, before perhaps enjoying a meal at Frank's Restaurant, named in honour of the polar explorer Francis Howard Bickerton who was born in the main hotel building. The restaurant and its terrace offer locally inspired dishes and a relaxing space to overlook the grounds. With free on-site parking, it's a convenient and pet-friendly retreat.

Located in the picturesque Iffley Village, the hotel offers a peaceful escape just two miles from Oxford's bustling city centre. Closer to the hotel, Iffley itself boasts the stunning 12th-century Norman church of St. Mary the Virgin, a prime example of Romanesque architecture, and the scenic Iffley Lock. The nearby Iffley Meadows present beautiful wildflower displays, especially in spring, making the area perfect for leisurely strolls and appreciating the serene Oxfordshire countryside.

We had such a wonderful stay at this hotel just outside of Oxford. After a last-minute scramble due to a scam Airbnb, we were so relieved to find this gem — and it completely exceeded our expectations.

From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. A special thank you to Wendy and Tomek, who went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The grounds are spacious, peaceful, and beautifully maintained. It’s both pet-friendly and wonderfully child-friendly, which made all the difference for us as a family. They even made our son’s Easter weekend truly magical — he was thrilled knowing the Easter Bunny was coming!

We stayed in the Elm House, and our room was gorgeous — light-filled, thanks to a huge bay window overlooking the grounds. The bathroom was luxurious, and the bed was supremely comfortable.

This place is perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing country escape with the convenience of being close to Oxford. It’s just a 10-minute bus ride into town, and honestly, we can’t wait to come back.

Highly, highly recommended.

I was part of a family party of 14 people, aged from 13-86 - plus two dogs - staying at the hotel for 2-3 days in May '25 for my parents' 60th wedding anniversary. I would recommend everything about the hotel, it's as great as it looks in the website photos, but also the location in the village of Iffley is fabulous. The rooms are great, the bar and restaurant have a great ambience and great food and drinks - and the patio and garden are fabulous. Everything is beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. The best dog friendly hotel we've found yet, also. But above all I'd like to compliment all of the staff. Extremely professional and charming, so helpful when needed - they really made our stay. We will definitely be back.

From the moment we stepped through the door, we were made to feel so welcome, valued and cared for! The accommodation was spacious, spotlessly clean with a tasteful, quirky decor that we very much enjoyed throughout the interior of the hotel.
The food was totally amazing and we were very lucky to enjoy the first days of the new menu. Nothing disappointed! - the flavour combinations, the perfect cooking and the service were all of the highest standard and left us so very impressed. Our breakfasts were fabulous too - piping hot and what a selection. A special thanks to Wendy and the other ladies for such a cheery, warm welcome to the start of our day.
We wish we had taken more notes of names but everyone we encountered during our stay deserves praise for going over and above at every opportunity. Absolutely wonderful and will recommend to all our family and friends Thank You all

Booked one night here as had a long drive, although I wish I stayed longer. Reception staff extremely friendly and rooms clean and well stocked with everything you need. Breakfast is a must and the staff are amazing there too, they cater for every need even though it's buffet style. I cannot remember the ladies name at breakfast but she was an absolute delight.

The staff really are great and in my opinion thats what makes a stay enjoyable. 10/10

I had a wonderful experience at this beautiful and peaceful hotel. It carries the calm, elegant vibe of an Oxford neighborhood, which made the stay feel especially relaxing. The interior decor was particularly charming, showcasing elements of Oxford’s shoemaking heritage and manufacturing steps, it added a unique and lovely touch to the ambiance.

The staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive throughout our stay. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely perfect, delicious, fresh, and thoughtfully prepared. A special thank you to Wendy from the restaurant team, whose warm and friendly service truly elevated our dining experience.

Highly recommended for anyone looking for a cozy, refined stay with great hospitality.
