Two 19th-century manor houses, nestled within three acres of tranquil gardens, form the heart of the Mercure Oxford Hawkwell House Hotel. This newly refurbished hotel presents a unique blend of historical charm and modern sophistication, with interiors stylishly inspired by classic Oxford fashion, such as the iconic brogue and collar. Guests can unwind in refined rooms featuring free WiFi, rainfall showers, and unique vintage-inspired decor, before perhaps enjoying a meal at Frank's Restaurant, named in honour of the polar explorer Francis Howard Bickerton who was born in the main hotel building. The restaurant and its terrace offer locally inspired dishes and a relaxing space to overlook the grounds. With free on-site parking, it's a convenient and pet-friendly retreat.
Located in the picturesque Iffley Village, the hotel offers a peaceful escape just two miles from Oxford's bustling city centre. A pleasant 40-minute walk or a shorter cycle along the River Thames towpath will take you directly into the heart of Oxford, where historic university colleges, the Ashmolean Museum, and the Covered Market await. Closer to the hotel, Iffley itself boasts the stunning 12th-century Norman church of St. Mary the Virgin, a prime example of Romanesque architecture, and the scenic Iffley Lock. The nearby Iffley Meadows present beautiful wildflower displays, especially in spring, making the area perfect for leisurely strolls and appreciating the serene Oxfordshire countryside.

From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. A special thank you to Wendy and Tomek, who went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The grounds are spacious, peaceful, and beautifully maintained. It’s both pet-friendly and wonderfully child-friendly, which made all the difference for us as a family. They even made our son’s Easter weekend truly magical — he was thrilled knowing the Easter Bunny was coming!
We stayed in the Elm House, and our room was gorgeous — light-filled, thanks to a huge bay window overlooking the grounds. The bathroom was luxurious, and the bed was supremely comfortable.
This place is perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing country escape with the convenience of being close to Oxford. It’s just a 10-minute bus ride into town, and honestly, we can’t wait to come back.
Highly, highly recommended.
