Housed within Sandford-on-Thames' Village Hall, the award-winning Sandford Talking Shop is a vibrant community hub run by dedicated local volunteers. More than just a place to buy essentials, it’s a lively centre offering fresh bread, newspapers, local produce like cheese, eggs, and milk, alongside a wide range of fruit and vegetables. The shop and café are open Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm and on Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. On Saturdays, the atmosphere buzzes a little more as the market often features guest stalls, and the café serves its renowned bacon and egg baps. It’s a welcoming space where you can grab a coffee, enjoy homemade soup or a filled roll, and connect with the local scene.
Beyond the daily convenience of the shop and café, Sandford Talking Shop fosters a strong sense of community through various activities and initiatives. Regular events include a Knit & Stitch group on Mondays, a monthly community lunch on the second Wednesday, and afternoon tea on the first Wednesday of the month. They also have a gardening team and a volunteer bike mechanic team called Spoke Shop, offering basic repairs during spring and summer. This initiative was born from a desire to bring resources back to the village after it had lost its school, pub, and post office, aiming to reduce social isolation and provide a friendly meeting point. It truly is a place shaped by and for the neighbourhood, offering a warm welcome to both residents and visitors alike.
