Details

Tucked away in the historic Golden Cross arcade off Cornmarket Street, this Pizza Express offers a unique dining experience within a remarkable 12th-century building. Imagine enjoying your favourite pizza surrounded by centuries of Oxford history, including medieval wall paintings that adorn the interior. Spread across two floors, the restaurant provides a spacious and family-friendly atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to refuel after a day of exploring the city's famous colleges and a convenient link to the Covered Market. The building itself, once a prominent coaching inn from the 15th century, has a rich past, even believed to have hosted performances by William Shakespeare's players in its courtyard. It’s a place where the aroma of freshly baked pizzas mingles with whispers of bygone eras.

Chefs in their signature striped t-shirts continue the tradition of tossing handmade pizzas in this relaxed and characterful setting. While part of a well-known chain, this particular branch stands out due to its significant heritage and central, yet surprisingly quiet, location. Originally known as Maugershall in 1193 and later the Golden Cross Inn, the site has seen extensive history, including serving as a bustling hotel with 38 rooms in 1911 before eventually housing the restaurant. The blend of modern Italian fare with the ancient structure, including original timberwork and even glimpses of early hand-painted wallpaper on the upper floors, creates a memorable meal out, whether you're after a quick lunch or a more leisurely dinner.

We visited here on my daughter's recommendation. I don't want to tell too many people about this restaurant! Pizza (gluten-free) was served on a black board to make it obvious which is which - smart and subtle move.
The building is wonderful for historians and anyone who likes quirky buildings.
The staff were friendly and polite throughout. We had a great conversation with one of the servers, Fergus (We're sorry if we kept him chatting too long!), and the manager, which extended a quick meal into a pleasant and memorable evening out. Many thanks to you both.
