Dating back to around 1809, The Grapes proudly stands as one of George Street's most enduring public houses, a resilient survivor amidst the street's evolving landscape of eateries and bars. This long-standing establishment, rebuilt in its current form around 1879, has witnessed Oxford's transformations for over two centuries, even being known perhaps originally as the Bunch of Grapes. While many neighbouring businesses have changed hands and purposes, The Grapes has remained a steadfast spot for refreshment and community. Its history includes periods under various breweries, each contributing to its character, from Greene King and Bath Ales, who notably revamped the pub, to West Berkshire Brewery who undertook a significant refurbishment in 2019, enhancing the bar and seating. Despite facing closures, most recently in December 2021, the pub reopened in August 2023, ready to welcome patrons once more.
Inside this historic venue, visitors will find a cosy and inviting atmosphere, a characteristic that has made it popular with theatre-goers from the nearby New Theatre, who often pop over for a quicker, and likely more varied, drink during intervals. The Grapes boasts an impressive selection of beverages, with mentions of up to eight hand pumps for cask ales and as many as 40 keg lines, ensuring a wide variety for every taste, from traditional bitters to hoppy craft beers, premium lagers, sours, and stouts. Alongside its extensive drinks menu, the pub offers a tempting array of classic British pub food, including popular choices like fish and chips, burgers, and sandwiches, with options for lunch deals and weekly specials. The interior, which has seen several makeovers, aims to blend traditional pub comfort with a welcoming buzz.

The barman today was so helpful and it was great to have the chef come out and ensure everything was alright and explain what he’d done to ensure our safety as one of the party has a seafood allergy.
I will be back again!
