Two real ales on tap and the welcoming glow of a genuine fire greet you at The Victoria, a traditional tavern nestled in the charming Jericho neighbourhood. This "anti-gastro pub" prides itself on a fuss-free, classic British pub experience, a world away from brewery-owned chains. Renowned for its pies, you'll find golden shortcrust pastry packed with rich flavours like steak and ale, alongside comforting vegetarian options and a vegan choice with a smoky red wine filling. The quirky interior, sometimes featuring a model plane suspended from the ceiling or kooky pictures, adds to its unpretentious and cosy atmosphere, complete with low lighting and squishy sofas perfect for settling in. It's a place that successfully blends a smart, stylish feel with intimate corners, making it a welcoming refuge.

Beyond the comforting indoors, The Victoria boasts a much-praised heated garden, offering a year-round retreat, and a front terrace ideal for watching the world go by on vibrant Walton Street. This outdoor space is considered by some to be the best in the area. The pub's convenient location makes it an easy stop while exploring Jericho, known as a new going-out strip in Oxford. Recently refurbished to enhance its cosy corners, including a new snug area, The Victoria maintains its friendly vibe and commitment to good drinks, from craft beers to a selection of over 100 whiskies. Whether you're after a hearty meal, a perfectly poured pint, or a space to unwind with friends, this spot delivers a quality pub feel in the city.

Food, beer, and atmosphere were all decent, though we were a little put off by having made an online reservation only to be stuck in a back room next to the dishwasher. (There are other tables available, so we moved.) Staff seemed a bit gruff in general but perhaps it was a busy night.
