Details

Nestled at 16 The Green, The Manor in Garsington, just a short distance from Oxford, offers a quintessential British gastropub experience within a building whose history stretches back to the 17th century. Once known as "Chaucers" due to its historical connection with the poet's son, Thomas Chaucer, who owned the land, the current structure was largely built in the 1630s. For a period in the early 20th century, from 1915 to 1924, it gained considerable fame as the home of Lady Ottoline Morrell, becoming a haven for literary and artistic figures like D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, and Bertrand Russell. While the historic Garsington Manor associated with Lady Morrell and the Bloomsbury Group is a separate private residence not generally open to the public except for occasional garden viewings, The Manor gastropub at The Green provides its own inviting atmosphere.

The Manor Garsington today is a welcoming spot for relaxed fine dining, blending traditional pub charm with modern culinary flair, noted for its hearty, seasonal dishes. Visitors can enjoy classic Sunday lunches with all the trimmings, wood-fired pizzas cooked in under two minutes, or choose from a diverse menu featuring everything from cider-battered fish and chips to vegan burgers and more adventurous options like grilled rabbit leg or Pica Pau. The establishment boasts various inviting spaces, including a main dining room, a private room with a fireplace, an expansive garden with a children's playground, a heated pergola, a tipi tent, and a luxury marquee, making it suitable for casual meals, family outings, and larger events or rustic weddings. Regular events such as quiz nights and live music add to the lively, family-friendly atmosphere.

I enjoyed my evening dinner here. All members of staff were welcoming from the get go, were really polite professional and welcoming. If you visit please try the pork belly! It was really delicious, and was accompanied by a subtly rich gravy, smooth mash potatoes and beautifully cooked greens. I would highly recommend! (The team are also really proud about the process it goes through to get to your plate! A lot of time and love is put into it!)

Thanks for welcoming me and I’ll be back the next time in the area.

Not sure where to start with this one! We came here based on other good reviews. When we arrived, the place looked good and the garden had fantastic views. Inside was also nice. We were greeted by staff who sat us down at the table and explained what wasn't available on the menu then we proceeded to order our food. We went for lamb Tacos and arancini balls. The arancini balls were over done and the lamb taco... well it was a wet soggy wrap. There is no way that it could be classed as a taco. (See picture). Then the mains come out, a mixed grill and risotto. The risotto was very chalky and the mixed grill wasn't the best. It was advertised as the following "Mixed grill, pork steak, pork sausage, beef steak, chicken wings, a slice of pork belly, chips and salad" my mixed grill come out missing the pork belly and pork sausage. Instead they claimed the pork steak was the pork belly and the pork sausage was infact a chorizo sausage. Everything on the plate was over done. The chicken wings looked like the ones you get to microwave and the garnish was a strange choice on top of the mixed grill. 3 big slices of orange and a lemon slice. I don't know if this place has recently changed hands or has just had a bad day but it wasn't good enough for the money you pay.

Delivery service for food was extremely good. Food was a little bit cold on arrival. Denise said the pastry was not quite cooked in the vegetarian option and far too much gravy on my dinner. Those were the negatives the other negative was a 10% surcharge which asked was £6.50 on top of our bill Which I think should be optional, overall gets a 3.5 star
