Nestled at 16 The Green, The Manor in Garsington, just a short distance from Oxford, offers a quintessential British gastropub experience within a building whose history stretches back to the 17th century. Once known as "Chaucers" due to its historical connection with the poet's son, Thomas Chaucer, who owned the land, the current structure was largely built in the 1630s. For a period in the early 20th century, from 1915 to 1924, it gained considerable fame as the home of Lady Ottoline Morrell, becoming a haven for literary and artistic figures like D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, and Bertrand Russell. While the historic Garsington Manor associated with Lady Morrell and the Bloomsbury Group is a separate private residence not generally open to the public except for occasional garden viewings, The Manor gastropub at The Green provides its own inviting atmosphere.
The Manor Garsington today is a welcoming spot for relaxed fine dining, blending traditional pub charm with modern culinary flair, noted for its hearty, seasonal dishes. Visitors can enjoy classic Sunday lunches with all the trimmings, wood-fired pizzas cooked in under two minutes, or choose from a diverse menu featuring everything from cider-battered fish and chips to vegan burgers and more adventurous options like grilled rabbit leg or Pica Pau. The establishment boasts various inviting spaces, including a main dining room, a private room with a fireplace, an expansive garden with a children's playground, a heated pergola, a tipi tent, and a luxury marquee, making it suitable for casual meals, family outings, and larger events or rustic weddings. Regular events such as quiz nights and live music add to the lively, family-friendly atmosphere.
