Standing proudly on Holywell Street since its construction in 1607, the Kings Arms is reputedly Oxford's oldest pub and quite possibly its brainiest, claiming the highest IQ per square foot globally. This historic establishment, located on land once occupied by Augustinian friars, has been a beloved haunt for university scholars, locals, and visitors for centuries, even serving as a venue for plays in the 17th century. Its multi-roomed, characterful interior, with some panelled back bars and comfy sofas, invites you to settle in for a pint of fine cask ale and hearty, homemade British pub food. Pies are a particular speciality, complemented by pub classics like fish and chips and great burgers, ensuring a satisfying experience.
The Kings Arms offers more than just a historic setting; it's a vibrant hub in the heart of Oxford, directly opposite the New Bodleian Library. Known to locals as the 'KA', its lively atmosphere makes it a popular spot, especially with the student population, and a place where eavesdropping on intellectual conversations is almost inevitable. With at least seven cask ales always on the bar, alongside seasonal spritzes and a full breakfast menu served from 9 am Monday to Saturday, there's something for every time of day. Whether you're seeking a traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings, a casual lunch, or a space for a private function in the Wadham Room, the Kings Arms delivers a quintessential Oxford pub experience.

This place is definitely a place up there to visit with all the little snugs to sit in, the buzzing atmosphere, with all age's eating and drinking. One of the bartenders pulled the perfect pint, really lively, clearly quickly with a good head on it.
Plenty of choice of real ales, food and drinks, I did like the idea of still being able to buy food snacks with your pint, like a scotch egg or sausage roll, these were accessible to the bartenders to serve straight away and not having to wait for the kitchen to plate them and find what table you're at.
We did order fish and chips from the menu, the fish batter was crisp, as were the chips. I also liked that you had curry sauce along with the tartar sauce.
The big surprise was the Oxford sauce, never seen it before but what a great sauce. So onto the big question would I go back, it's a yes, great place.

Fish and chips was good.
Dessert dishes were delicious.
We also had and shared the fennel, orange and chestnut salad a complete vegetarian meal or side or starter, and it was tasty
I haven’t got used to stepping away from my table to go and order my meal. I do like table service. Maybe I’m spoiled.
