Candlelight flickers across wooden furniture and fresh flowers at Pierre Victoire, a cornerstone of Oxford's dining scene since 1996, nestled on the characterful Little Clarendon Street. This much-loved independent French bistrot has built a loyal following by consistently delivering traditional, skillfully prepared Gallic cuisine in a wonderfully informal, buzzy setting where everyone feels welcome. The emphasis here is on generous, well-rounded dining experiences at sensible prices, with their popular fixed-price menus offering a fantastic way to explore classic dishes. Expect prompt and efficient service, whether you're settling in for a leisurely meal or a pre-theatre dinner. The restaurant’s charming, rustic decor, complete with those signature candlelit tables, only enhances the authentically French, intimate atmosphere.

Step off Little Clarendon Street, itself a hub of bohemian shops and cafes occasionally nicknamed 'Little Trendy Street', and into a warm, homely environment that’s perfect for anything from a casual dinner to a special romantic occasion. Pierre Victoire’s menu is a roll-call of French classics, from French onion soup and escargots to coq au vin, duck leg confit, and steak frites, with recent praise for their salmon fricassee and moules marinières. Their commitment to authentic French cuisine extends to a carefully curated wine list, proudly supplied by local family-owned SH Jones Wines, featuring a range designed to complement the food perfectly. Consistently lauded for its excellent value and the quality of its fresh, seasonal ingredients, this bistro remains a favourite for both Oxford residents and visitors seeking a genuine taste of France.

We arrived right on time at 12:00 noon, and the restaurant was completely full within 45 minutes.

We ordered one two-course and one three-course lunch set. For the starters, we had calamari and French onion soup. The calamari was tender, and the soup was well-seasoned and perfectly balanced with the crispy bread.

For the main courses, we had slow-braised duck leg and fresh mussels. As the menu stated, the mussels were incredibly fresh and creamy. They really whetted our appetites, and we couldn’t stop eating! The duck leg was tender and flavorful. The most amazing part was the rösti underneath, which absorbed the orange sauce and made the dish even more incredible. The chocolate mousse was the perfect ending to our lunch.

The staff are polite and efficient. An excellent experience for our Oxford trip! Thank you!

Nice restaurant. Overall the food is are good and with good price.

Most people ordered the steak. The steak is nice except the fries. The fries are not fresh.

Sitting at second floor is a good idea as the window is opened and with better ventilation. Also, quiet. You can enjoy your meal there.

Lovely little French restaurant, it’s £36.50 for a 3 course meal and the portions are generous. I’ve never fully completed a meal and this is my second time back here. I recommend the mussels they are a huge portion and very tasty!
