Details

Classic Sri Lankan street food awaits at 76 Saint Clement's Street, where The Coconut Tree serves an explosion of flavours with their tapas-style small plates. Here, you'll find traditional dishes like hoppers – bowl-shaped coconut milk pancakes with sambols and salsa – alongside rich curries and the popular Kotthu, a dish of finely chopped roti stir-fried with vegetables, egg, and your choice of meat or vegan protein. The vibrant, "hip setting" comes alive with bare-brick walls, low-hanging lights, and even a small garden for warmer days, creating a buzzy atmosphere perfect for sharing food and "Cocotails". It’s a place known for its warm hospitality, where the staff are happy to guide you through the extensive menu that caters generously to vegan and vegetarian diners.

Don't expect a quiet meal; the vibe is young, fun, and often soundtracked by a dance-y playlist that might have you bopping in your seat as you explore the menu. Signature "Cocotails," like the Sriki-Tiki which can be set on fire, or the pineapple-heavy Beach Boy, add to the holiday mood. Dishes are designed for sharing, with recommendations of about three plates per person, allowing you to sample a wide array of Sri Lankan tastes, from spicy devilled dishes to milder, fragrant curries. Whether you're after a lively night out, a flavourful date night, or a casual meal with friends, The Coconut Tree offers a unique and sociable dining experience that’s known for being both delicious and reasonably priced.

Visited for family dinner and we were craving some curries as we were on a spree of trying local cuisine.

The service was great, the owner was really Witty and made us feel really welcome.

We ended up over ordering but surprised ourselves when we finished what we ordered.

My have, Prawn Curry, their sambhals were really amazing and authentic, I tried both plain and egg hopper, would recommend the plain one as the one with egg was a bit thicker.

The mocktails too were good.

Reccomend the bottomless brunch. Such good value for money.

We were a big party of 19 people this weekend and everything was great.

The food is absolutely delicious, the cocktails are brilliant and some theatrical ones too. All made to order.

Our waiter was so attentive (despite being asked 55 questions everytime he came to the table) and absolutely made our day.

We were probably such hard work as a group as a lot of us but the experience was amazing- thank you! We will be back (in smaller groups 🤣)

We had a pleasurable experience at dining in coconut tree. Special compliments to staff who were amazing and very hospitable.

Positives: Great ambience, lot of spaces to seat, great staff and overall a nice atmosphere!

Negatives: Food, don't know why but food served was on bit colder side. Recipes are great, but taste are similar.

We ordered egg hoppers, they were great. Jafna Mutton curry was underwhelming, cold and even bit undercooked. Devilled Prawns were okay.

Decent Drinks.

Total bill: £60.5 (for two people), Including food, drinks and services.

Drinks: really lovely drinks, the raspberry martini and iced tea were both delicious.

Food: mostly great. The beetroot dish, sold as a 'curry' but is more a warm salad, was lovely and earthy. The roti was hot and soft, the perfect vessel for scooping. The hoppers were crispy and the perfect accompaniment to the sambals.

We all agreed the cauliflower had spend a little too long in the fryer and for one of my friends it was too spicy. Had it been cooked a little less it would have been perfect for me, especially the incredible caramelised onions. However it was a bit too hard and some florets were a bit too bitter.

I didn't try it, but those that did agreed the fish in the fish curry was perfectly cooked, however the actually curry sauce was a bit salty.

Service and atmosphere: Really lovely service and atmosphere vibrant. Ella, our waitress, was wonderful. Super friendly, attentive and clearly knew the menu. I do feel sorry for waiters and waitresses though when they have to give the whole "small plates for sharing" shpeal. Makes me cringe.

Overall a wonderful evening and a great spot for a Saturday night.

The cocktail selections are amazing, tasty and there is even a performance for the lighting up the rum coated sugar for the lion cocktail!!

Also very good for the street foods, like this egg hopper (pancake with egg and caramelized onion and spicy sauce) is really tasty and impressive. You can take away some spicy sauce at first to see hows the level of spicy for you.

For mains, I would say vegan options are much better than meat options. The jackfruit wings, cashew nut curry, and generally string hoper kotthu! But the fish I ordered are quite salty and too soft for me, also the green soup are not so good looking.

Would come for drinks and sides and vegan options again👍
