A 17th-century country inn with its charming thatched roof, The Perch has been a fixture in Binsey for an incredible 800 years, even older than some parts of the university. Just a few minutes' walk from the Isis, Oxford's stretch of the Thames, and the historic Port Meadow, its location is idyllic. This pub is steeped in literary history, having been a favoured spot for Lewis Carroll, who is said to have given early readings of Alice in Wonderland here, and it was also frequented by C.S. Lewis and Inspector Morse. The surrounding Binsey Poplars were even immortalised in a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Damaged by fire تاريخيا, the pub has been sensitively restored, retaining its historic charm.
Inside, a cosy atmosphere with a vast leather Chesterfield and log burners awaits, while the sprawling, sunlit garden is the envy of Oxford, featuring ancient weeping willows and even an outdoor bar called The Shed. The Perch serves classic British pub fare with a focus on seasonal and quality ingredients, offering everything from home-baked breads and pies to fresh river and sea fish, and a highly-regarded Sunday roast. They cater well to families and are dog-friendly, making it a perfect stop after a walk on Port Meadow. Whether you're seeking a pint of local ale, a glass of wine, or a hearty meal, The Perch offers a warm welcome and a memorable experience.

Liked all our orders just find that there's too much potato on the roasts and wish there's more of the roasts itself. Otherwise, the service is good and the restaurant is very lively.
We then returned for our lunch. The staff were so attentive, friendly, polite, interactive and answered our questions about the surroundings and said we could park the car and go for a longer walk after food.
The food itself was delicious! We had the fish and chips, fish cakes, the vegan burger and ginger bread pudding for dessert (highly recommended this dessert). All arrived timely with no delays.
We were seated in the garden house. There is seating in the original pub area and the outside garden as well.
All in all, a wonderful experience and one we will return to for sure!
Tip: book ahead for busier times as this venue can get very busy.
