Nestled in Jericho at Aristotle House, along a canal front, Sabali Pots Community Studio offers a welcoming space for pottery enthusiasts. Since June 2018, it has provided local potters an affordable and friendly environment to connect, create, and learn from one another. The studio is part of Makespace Oxford and is easily accessible by a short walk, cycle, or bus ride from the city centre, with some on-street and visitor parking available. Members of this collective primarily focus on crafting functional ceramics, producing handmade items designed to make everyday moments a bit more special, such as cosy mugs for your morning coffee or unique vases for spring bouquets. The eclectic group of potters each brings their unique style, resulting in a diverse range of ceramics from rustic speckled milk jugs to items with playful carved insect motifs and modern white vases.
For those new to pottery, Sabali Pots sometimes offers "Have A Go" sessions on selected Sunday mornings. These 90-minute classes are perfect for total beginners, providing an introduction to using a pottery wheel under the guidance of an experienced teacher in a small class setting, ensuring everyone gets their own wheel. It's an opportunity to have fun and experience the craft, though mastering pottery takes years. While the Oxford studio primarily functions as a membership space with open access for its members to use the four electric pottery wheels, tools, clays, glazes, and kiln, these introductory sessions can be a great starting point. The studio fosters a supportive community, drawn together by a shared love of clay and creativity, and sometimes hosts events like pop-up ceramics markets or participates in Oxfordshire Artweeks, showcasing their members' work.
