Caribbean Living Room

58 Between Towns Road, Oxford, OX4 3LR, GB

Details

A recreation of a typical 1960s West Indian front room awaits you at 58 Between Towns Road, offering a unique glimpse into the lives and homes of the Windrush generation in Oxford. This carefully curated space, a project by Fusion Arts in partnership with ACKHI (African and Caribbean Kultural Heritage Initiative) and BK LUWO, is more than just a room; it's a vibrant expression of Caribbean culture, filled with objects, pictures, coloured glass, and distinctive furniture that evoke a strong sense of home and belonging. It serves as a powerful reminder of how these living rooms became vital safe spaces for socialising and community gatherings in a period when other venues were not always welcoming. Open weekly from Tuesday to Thursday, 10 am to 4 pm, this free-to-visit (donations welcome) exhibition also plays a role in wider cultural celebrations, such as marking the Windrush anniversary.

The Caribbean Living Room stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of those who established new lives in the UK, bringing with them vibrant cultural traditions. You'll find clashing colours and patterns, an authentic reflection of Caribbean aesthetics and their evolving forms in Britain. The exhibition, which has previously toured to the Museum of Oxford and a pop-up in Templars Square, Cowley, includes items collected by Junie James and donated by the community, each telling a part of the story. Fusion Arts, an organisation committed to making art accessible and fostering community creativity, uses spaces like this to bring people together and support artistic expression, often transforming vacant locations into vibrant cultural hubs. This particular project also involved collaborations with Oxford Brookes University students, exploring themes of belonging and cultural space.
