Details

Punting from the Magdalen Bridge Boathouse is a quintessential Oxford experience, offering a unique perspective of the city from the gentle River Cherwell. Situated conveniently at the lower end of the High Street, beneath the imposing Magdalen College Tower, the boathouse provides traditionally crafted punts, along with rowing boats and pedalos. You can hire a punt for an hour or make a day of it, gliding past the famous Botanic Gardens and through the historic Christ Church College Meadows. This iconic pastime has been enjoyed by students, residents, and visitors for generations, with roots stretching back to the Victorian era when pleasure punting first gained popularity. Basic training is available for beginners, ensuring everyone can try their hand at propelling these flat-bottomed boats.

As you navigate the shallow, slow-moving waters, you'll drift by the picturesque St Hilda's College gardens and the beautiful Magdalen School rose gardens. It was in this serene setting, near Christ Church Meadows, that Lewis Carroll found inspiration for "Alice in Wonderland". Whether you choose to self-hire or opt for a chauffeured punt for ultimate relaxation, the journey offers tranquil views and a chance to soak in the unique atmosphere of Oxford. Punts can typically accommodate up to five people, making it an ideal activity for families, friends, or a romantic outing. Remember to return your boat at least half an hour before sunset to complete your memorable river excursion.

Peaceful Oxford moments by the river

This part of Oxford feels completely different from the academic side — it’s quieter, greener, and more relaxed.
I walked along the riverside near Magdalen Bridge and saw people punting slowly along the water. The sound of the water, birds, and trees made it feel far away from city life, even though I was only a few minutes from the colleges.

I didn’t go punting myself this time, but just watching the boats glide past was peaceful. The houses, gardens, and old bridges along the water give this area a storybook feel.
It’s also a great place to take photos or just sit and rest for a while.

If you have a few hours in Oxford, I highly recommend walking around this area — especially in the afternoon or early evening.
It’s one of those places where you don’t have to do much — just being there is enough.

Thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable! The “chauffeur” or “punter” was knowledgeable about the colleges and history which made it very interesting indeed.

My friend and I went punting on the river Cherwell and decided to do it ourselves instead of hiring a chauffeur. It was our first time, and the experience was both fun and a bit frightening. Without proper technique, we had to put in a lot of effort, which left us pretty exhausted by the end. Despite the challenge, we managed to complete the journey within the time limit and didn’t have to pay any extra charges £8, a tiring but memorable adventure!

Beautiful experience!! Worth the price, a once in a lifetime thing to do. They are cash only so come prepared. We did the self punt and it took just a little while to get the hang of it, but if you think you’re coordinated and athletic - you should be fine. Perfect on a summer evening.
