Details

Your journey into the heart of academic history begins at Trinity College on Broad Street, a magnificent institution founded in 1555 on the grounds of the even older Durham College. As you join an Oxford Walking Tour, you'll stand before a college that was originally established to train Catholic priests and has since evolved through centuries of English religious and educational reform. Picture its earliest scholars moving into the ancient quadrangle, a site chosen for its then-quiet, rural aspect, now a vibrant part of the city centre. The very architecture around you, from the 17th-century Gothic-style chapel to the serene gardens, whispers tales of its prestigious past and the layers of history embedded in its stones. Fully qualified guides, often members of the Oxford Guild of Tour Guides, bring these stories to life, offering insights you simply can't get from a guidebook.

Stepping out from Trinity College, your walking tour will unfold the wider narrative of Oxford, a city crammed with visual delights and pivotal moments in history. Knowledgeable guides, some of whom are university alumni, share anecdotes about famous graduates, literary giants like C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and the real-life settings for beloved books and films, including Harry Potter, Inspector Morse, and X-Men. These tours are designed to be engaging, often tailored to your interests, whether that's the intricate workings of the medieval university, the stories behind its most famous students, or the specific locations immortalised on screen. You'll see iconic landmarks such as the Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera, and learn to navigate the charming streets, all while gaining a deeper understanding of student life and university rituals. Jonathan was an exceptional tour guide for our family in Oxford. He provided wonderfully animated insights into the history of a variety of sites in Oxford and customized his tour for the interests of our family (Harry Potter for the kids, CS Lewis and Tolkien for the grown ups). Highly recommended!

I had a great tour with Simon. He was an excellent guide and a wonderful storyteller. Oxford has so much symbolism and history, and Simon shared much of it with the group, as well as insights into great pubs and books.

During September 2025, our pilgrimage group from Colorado, USA, enjoyed several days in Oxford. We were fortunate to have Jonathan Self as our tour guide for a unique perspective on the friendship between JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis. Jonathan's wit, knowledge and passion brought welcomed color and detail to a story about which group members had varying depths of knowledge. He was patient with our many questions and, at least for one member of our group, led to him pursuing a deeper exploration of questions about faith and life. The tour was a highlight of our time in Oxford and something which I would happily do again.

Fantastic tour led by Jonathan on 29/11. As a past student, he clearly has an enormous passion for the university and city and this shone through in the commentary he gave.
The pace was energetic and enabled us to see and learn about so much and fit a great number of locations in.

My 17 year old son and I took the Private Tour and added the school admissions. I highly recommend this. It was very informative and enjoyable. We had the best tour guide.
