Details

Saint Michael's Street in Oxford, itself a lane with a history stretching back to when it was known as Bocardo Lane and then New Inn Hall Street East, serves as the starting point for a captivating journey into the city's profound Christian past. This guided walk steers you through the picturesque streets and past the iconic university colleges, sites intrinsically linked with pivotal moments and figures in Christian history. You will encounter locations connected to the advocacy for an English Bible by pioneers like William Tyndale and John Wycliffe, and stand at the poignant site where the Oxford Martyrs – Thomas Cranmer, Nicholas Ridley, and Hugh Latimer – made the ultimate sacrifice for their beliefs. The narrative of the tour also encompasses the meticulous crafting of the King James Bible within these historic walls and the very origins of the Methodist movement, driven by John and Charles Wesley along with George Whitefield.

This two-hour exploration, often starting from the Martyrs' Memorial, delves into how Oxford became a crucible for ideas and movements that have significantly shaped Christianity both in Britain and globally. Led by knowledgeable guides, often Oxford University students or alumni, the tour illuminates the stories behind landmarks such as the Bodleian Library, St Mary's University Church, Christ Church, and Merton College. Beyond the Reformation, you'll touch upon the influential Oxford Movement with figures like John Henry Newman, and even the literary and faith contributions of C.S. Lewis. It's an opportunity to traverse cobbled streets and admire breathtaking architecture, understanding the deep Christian currents that have flowed through this "City of Dreaming Spires" for centuries, connecting past faith traditions with the present.

Best tour I’ve ever had….its private so we could hear and ask questions. We learned all about the school, student life, the history and people
Who have gone to Oxford throughout its history. We learned about the reformation and even earlier history. Alberto was our guide and we loved him! I would recommend this tour if you want to see the inside of some of the colleges and hear how the school is structured and hear about the great men of faith throughout the years in Oxford. It’s worth it!!!
