Details

A cornerstone of St Aldate's street, this traditional Victorian pub sits invitingly just a stone's throw from Carfax Tower and the High Street, placing it squarely in the heart of Oxford. It’s an independent free house priding itself on a superb range of local cask ales, often featuring at least two from local breweries, and is accredited by both Cask Marque and CAMRA LocAle. Alongside a rotating selection of craft beers and an impressive choice of wines and spirits, they serve freshly cooked, homemade food daily. The menu boasts tempting vegetarian and vegan options alongside hearty pub classics, small plates, and generous sharing 'Bar Boards', with their Sunday roasts reputed to be among Oxford's best. Families, locals, students, tourists, and even well-behaved dogs find a warm welcome here.

More than just a place for a pint and a meal, St Aldates Tavern offers a lively hub of activity. Its function room, the Blue Room, hosts a variety of regular events, including all major sporting fixtures shown on TV, and has previously hosted movie nights, open mic sessions, and talks. This versatile space, complete with its own bar, is also available for private hire, perfect for anything from meetings to celebrations. With a selection of books and board games available, it’s easy to settle in and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. Whether you're seeking a quiet lunch, a pre-theatre drink, or an evening of entertainment, this city-centre pub provides a welcoming retreat from the bustle of Oxford's shopping areas and historic colleges.

Jorvic found another Cask Marque pub so popped in to try another real ale. One room downstairs with a function room on the next floor. Toilets down in the basement. A very chilled aircon on an oddly sunny July day in wash out summer 24. Good beer selection. Paulicarus sharing a wine with the missus. Had a Good Old Dad bitter by Renegade brewery. ( was West Berkshire brewery)
