Details

Originally opened in 1933 as a mission hall for the Cold Harbour area, St Luke's Church on Canning Crescent has a rich history of community involvement. It was established under St Matthew's Church, partly to provide a Sunday school for local boys involved in the Boys' Brigade. Fundraising for the £1,100 building involved sales of work, Lenten boxes, and collections. The initial structure featured timber-framed walls with creosoted weatherboarding and an asbestos tiled roof. Over the decades, St Luke's has adapted to the needs of its neighbourhood, hosting a baby weighing clinic in the 1940s and various children's and teenagers' clubs. A significant refurbishment and extension in 2013, known as "the Big project," transformed the building into a refreshed and welcoming space for numerous local groups and organisations.

Today, St Luke's continues to be a vibrant hub, working in partnership with its sibling church, St Matthew's, to serve the wider parish. The church actively fosters a sense of community by offering practical care, working for peace and reconciliation, and providing a space for sharing food, fun, creativity, and the arts. It hosts a variety of activities and groups, including Pilates and TRE sessions, and the "Sister Act Girls' Group" for ages 10-14. St Luke's is also a venue for community art events and workshops, showcasing local talent and offering a diverse range of disciplines from mosaics to poetry and painting. Supported by the Oxford Food Hub, the church provides food basics to families in the neighbourhood and connects individuals with resources like the Acts 435 giving website for direct financial assistance. The church hall is available for hire and is suitable for various activities, from keep-fit classes to birthday parties.
