Inspire Sculpture By Alan Wilson

Oxford Castle, Oxford, OX1 1LJ, GB

Details

Standing an impressive 7.62 metres tall, Alan Wilson's 'Inspire' sculpture, crafted from Doulting and Bath stone with bronze and stainless steel elements, commands attention within the historic Oxford Castle quarter. Unveiled in May 2006, this striking obelisk was commissioned by the Trevor Osborne Partnership and thoughtfully designed to interact with its surroundings. Wilson, a sculptor with decades of experience creating public and private commissions, envisioned 'Inspire' to reference ancient obelisks and their connection to the sun's arc. The sculpture's overall form mirrors a large ancient window nearby, while its blend of materials pays homage to both the age-old and contemporary architecture that defines the space.

Located in a lane within the Oxford Castle grounds, 'Inspire' offers a contemporary artistic focal point amidst a site steeped in history. The sculpture's presence encourages a moment of reflection on the interplay between past and present, as its modern lines contrast and complement the ancient castle walls and the newer buildings of the redeveloped quarter. As you explore the rich heritage of Oxford Castle, from its Norman origins to its later use as a prison, allow Wilson’s 'Inspire' to provide a thought-provoking pause. This carefully considered artwork not only enhances the visual landscape but also prompts contemplation on the enduring evolution of this significant Oxford landmark.
