The scent of fine leather and the sound of Italian opera often greet you upon entering Scriptum, nestled on historic Turl Street, a lane that itself dates back over 600 years. This unique emporium, founded in 2003 by Azeem Zakria after inspiration from a Florentine stationery shop, is an Aladdin's Cave for those who appreciate the art of writing and the beauty of artisanal products. Within its characterful walls, which expanded in 2020, you'll find an extensive collection of hand-stitched leather-bound journals, exquisite fountain pens including Murano glass pens, and a vibrant array of inks and sealing waxes. More than just a stationer's, Scriptum also curates a selection of beautifully bound fiction books and is noted for holding Oxfordshire's largest assortment of Venetian masks.
Every item within Scriptum is thoughtfully chosen, with many products sourced from small businesses in Britain and Italy, reflecting a commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail. The shop offers a personal stationery service for bespoke printing and engraving, alongside a comprehensive wedding stationery service that attracts clients even from London. Beyond the tangible goods, the experience is sensory, from the tactile pleasure of smooth wooden globes and soft leather to the aroma of scented candles and Santa Maria Novella soaps. Knowledgeable staff, some of whom are artists and calligraphers themselves, are on hand to share insights into each product, whether it’s a unique lava stone fountain pen or a small brass clip for holding books open. It’s a place where the tradition of the handwritten word is cherished and actively encouraged.

There was something gorgeous around every corner and there was so much I was tempted to buy. From notebooks to quirky bookends, pens, wax seals and so many bookish goodies, I would definitely recommend visiting.
