Details

A simple pastry chef from Oxford, James Sadler, etched his name into history on October 4th, 1784, by becoming the first Englishman to pilot a hot air balloon. Launched from Christ Church Meadow, his self-constructed balloon, warmed by a wood burner, ascended to an impressive 3,600 feet before safely landing near Woodeaton, roughly six miles away. This daring thirty-minute flight captivated the nation and turned Sadler, who had previously worked in his family's refreshment house, into an overnight celebrity. His achievement was a significant moment in early aviation, inspiring widespread fascination with ballooning and marking a pivotal step in humankind's quest to conquer the skies. The plaque on Abingdon Road serves as a quiet reminder of this Oxford local's extraordinary contribution to flight.

Beyond his initial pioneering ascent, James Sadler was a man of diverse talents and relentless scientific curiosity. He wasn't merely a showman; he was an engineer, inventor, and experimenter who meticulously designed and built his own balloons, even manufacturing his own hydrogen for later flights. His aeronautical career spanned over 40 years and included some 50 flights, during which he often carried instruments for scientific data gathering. Sadler also delved into other scientific and engineering pursuits, experimenting with coal gas for lighting, steam-powered carriages, and even improvements to cannon design. Although largely overlooked by the formal academic circles of Oxford at the time, his practical ingenuity and daring exploits cemented his status as a significant, if somewhat unsung, figure in British innovation.

Excellent lots of parking and buses running constantly ; pay at the machines as you can add the bus ticket that’s a very good deal ; on September 24; parking plus bus ticket for 2 people cost £5 we needed to buy extra 2 bus ticket with bus driver as we were a party of 4 but that’s ok. (Machine offer just 2 bus tickets with car park )
Bus drivers were really nice and helpful.
Buses are comfortable and 5 stars because they are dog friendly as well .

Only negative are the “facilities” - for such a busy park and ride they are old and usually pretty manky. Shane as for many first visitors it’s not a great first impression.
Lots of parking and chargers for EVa too
