Details

The iconic gates of Trinity College on Broad Street serve as the starting point for many explorations of Oxford's rich past, a city teeming with academic heritage and architectural splendour. Knowledgeable guides, often university alumni, lead you through cobbled lanes, unveiling centuries of history from Saxon origins to the esteemed university's evolution. You'll trace the literary paths of famous authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, and perhaps spot familiar backdrops from "Harry Potter" or "Inspector Morse" productions. These award-winning tours often include exterior views of illustrious landmarks such as the Bodleian Library, the Radcliffe Camera, and the Sheldonian Theatre, with some tours offering access to college grounds or even the historic Divinity School.

Lasting typically between 90 minutes to two hours, the walking tours are generally easy-paced and cover a relatively small, flat area of the city centre, making them accessible for most visitors. Many operators focus on small group sizes to ensure a more personal and engaging experience, allowing for plenty of interaction with your guide. Beyond the general historical and university-themed walks, you might find specialist options focusing on literary figures, film locations, or even ghost tours for an evening thrill. These excursions not only showcase the famous spires and quadrangles but also delve into student life, ancient traditions, and the captivating stories that bring Oxford's unique character to life.

During September 2025, our pilgrimage group from Colorado, USA, enjoyed several days in Oxford. We were fortunate to have Jonathan Self as our tour guide for a unique perspective on the friendship between JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis. Jonathan's wit, knowledge and passion brought welcomed color and detail to a story about which group members had varying depths of knowledge. He was patient with our many questions and, at least for one member of our group, led to him pursuing a deeper exploration of questions about faith and life. The tour was a highlight of our time in Oxford and something which I would happily do again.
