A seven-mile journey aboard one of England's oldest and longest narrow-gauge railways, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, offers a unique perspective on the Cumbrian landscape. Affectionately nicknamed 'La'al Ratty', meaning "little railway" in old Cumbrian dialect, its heritage steam and diesel engines pull carriages from Ravenglass, the Lake District National Park's only coastal village, across the estuary and through scenic woodlands. The 40-minute trip, a favourite of fell walker Alfred Wainwright, winds towards Dalegarth for Boot station, situated near the foot of England's highest mountains, revealing stunning views of the Scafell range. Passengers can choose between open-top carriages for sunny days or cosy covered ones, ensuring a memorable experience as they pass seven intermediate request stops, ideal for hopping off to explore local walks.

Upon arrival at the main Ravenglass station, or before you depart, the free-to-enter Ravenglass Railway Museum provides a fascinating insight into the line's 150-year history, from its beginnings transporting iron ore to its current role as a beloved tourist attraction. Interactive displays, preserved locomotives, and various artefacts bring the story of 'La'al Ratty' to life for all ages. Both Ravenglass and Dalegarth stations are well-equipped with eateries like the Turntable Café and Fellbites, gift shops, and children's play areas. Ravenglass itself, a historic Roman port, also offers attractions such as the remains of a Roman Bath House and is within easy reach of Muncaster Castle, making the railway a perfect starting point for a broader exploration of the area.

We had a lovely trip on the Laal Ratty today, I booked tickets yesterday online. The outgoing journey was in a semi enclosed carriage, the return however was in a closed carriage. The weather was fantastic, sunny and warm so I asked the men on the platform if there was any chance of going in the open carriage. Going from Ravenglass it was full, but the man did try, he was very helpful, however on the return journey the man at Dalegarth let us sit in the open carriage as the train wasnt full, this was after i had already swapped for a semi enclosed carriage! I cant praise both of the plarform men (sorry i didnt get their names) enough as they were extremely helpful.

Visited for the 150th anniversary. Great event, staff were fantastic and helpful. The sort of usual, polite and knowledgeable folk you'd expect at one of our preserved railways. So good I became a member.

Good that the weather was sunny. Book tickets ahead of time as it's quite busy. Lovely journey through the countryside to Boot. We were able to walk to the mill, but low water meant it was not in operation, but good to walk around the mill, etc.

We received a tapas picnic experience from our son and wife, daughter and partner for our Golden wedding anniversary. The whole experience was an absolute delight. We rode in the very exclusive Ruth carriage which is a gem. The quality of the inside of the carriage is stunning.
Michele was our personal attendant and was very attentive and helpful.
