The tall octagonal chimney on Manor Farm Road is a significant local landmark and a reminder of Morrell's Brewery, which operated in Oxford for over two centuries. Founded in 1743 as the Lion Brewery and later acquired by the Morrell family in 1782, it became the city's only major brewery. This specific chimney, an impressive structure, was designed by the architect Harry Drinkwater and added to the Lion Brewery site in St Thomas Street in 1901. Although brewing ceased at the St Thomas Street location in 1998, and the site was largely redeveloped into apartments in 2002, the iconic chimney and the waterwheel were preserved. It stands as a testament to Oxford's industrial heritage and the long history of the Morrell family's brewing enterprise in the city.
While the original Morrell's brewery is no longer operational, the spirit of local brewing continues in Oxford. The Oxford Brewery, now located at Manor Farm Road in Horspath, carries on the tradition of crafting beers in the city. This modern brewery was established over a decade ago and brings together The Shotover Brewing Co and Oxford Craft Beer Co, focusing on innovation while respecting Oxford's rich brewing heritage. They produce a range of award-winning classic real ales and distinctive craft beers, all vegan-friendly and brewed on-site. Visitors can often find their beers at local pubs and may be interested in exploring the current brewery's offerings, which sometimes include a nod to Oxford legends in their branding. The historic chimney, though separate from the current brewery's operations, serves as a prominent reminder of the deep-rooted history of brewing in the region.
