Details

Nestled by Osney Lock on East Street, Oxford, you'll find Osney Lock Hydro, a pioneering community-owned hydroelectric scheme and the first of its kind to be built on the River Thames. This initiative harnesses the natural flow of the river, using an Archimedes screw turbine, to generate clean electricity – enough to power around 60 homes annually. Conceived in 2001 by local residents and becoming operational in May 2015, the project showcases a passionate commitment to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions. Beyond its energy generation, the site is a testament to community spirit, largely funded by local share offers and managed by dedicated volunteers. It also aims to generate a sustainable income stream for local environmental projects for decades to come.

The Osney Lock Hydro warmly welcomes visitors to explore its innovative approach to green energy. The site is generally open to the public from Friday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm, offering a chance to see the impressive Archimedes screw in action, weather and river conditions permitting. Information boards and a digital display clearly explain the workings of the hydro. As part of the project, a fish pass was installed, allowing fish to navigate this section of the river freely for the first time in 200 years, a feature you can also observe. The thoughtfully designed powerhouse and wildlife-friendly garden, complete with native UK species and a mosaic 'human sun dial', enhance the visit. For those keen to delve deeper, guided tours can sometimes be arranged for groups, and a self-guided tour of Osney Island explains the hydro's wider role in the local energy network.
