Details

A Saxon cross stands as a testament to the ancient origins of St Aldates Church, a site of Christian worship for over a thousand years. The main structure of the nave and chancel you see today dates back to the 12th century, with significant remodelling and extensions occurring over the centuries, including the addition of north and south aisles in the 14th and 15th centuries to accommodate Oxford's growing population. The original 13th-century tower was entirely rebuilt in 1873, creating the Victorian tower that is a notable feature. Inside, visitors can find historical features such as medieval tombs and stained glass windows that recount stories of the church's long past. Archaeological investigations have even revealed evidence of Saxon occupation on the site, including burials.

Located centrally on St Aldate's street, opposite Christ Church college and next to Pembroke College, the church remains a vibrant hub of activity. It offers three Sunday services and serves as a spiritual home for many in the city, known for its welcoming atmosphere for both locals and tourists. Beyond its regular worship, St Aldates is actively involved in the community, hosting various events and outreach programs. The church has a significant congregation and a considerable staff team, with offices located nearby on Pembroke Street. While exploring its rich history and architectural journey from Saxon times to Victorian and modern refurbishments, visitors can also appreciate its role as a living church in the heart of Oxford.
