Creaking floorboards and remarkably low ceilings welcome you to The Bear Tavern, a pub whose history is woven into the very fabric of Oxford. Reputedly one of the city's oldest public houses, its current building dates from the 17th century when it served as an ostler's residence, though a pub has existed in different forms nearby since 1242. Inside, the atmosphere is thick with centuries of stories, and your eyes will inevitably be drawn to the pub's most peculiar treasure: a vast collection of over 4,500 snipped-off ties adorning the walls and ceiling. This tradition, started by a landlord in 1952, saw patrons donate their neckwear, often from clubs, schools, or military regiments, in exchange for a half-pint of beer, creating a unique and ever-growing tapestry of local and international affiliations.
Tucked away on Alfred Street, just a stone's throw from the bustling High Street and the historic Christ Church college, The Bear Inn offers a cosy retreat for students, locals, and tourists alike. This Fuller's establishment is renowned for its selection of real ales and traditional, home-cooked pub food, making it an ideal spot to relax after a walk or to find warmth during colder months. The pub’s diminutive size contributes to its intimate and lively atmosphere, particularly in the small public bar and even smaller snug. Though currently closed for refurbishment, The Bear is set to reopen its doors on July 4th, 2025, ready to continue its legacy as a beloved Oxford institution.
