Located on New Inn Hall Street, the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church stands as a testament to Gothic Revival architecture, completed in 1878. Its very stones tell a story of faith and perseverance, as it was built to accommodate a growing congregation and to mark the significant moment when Oxford University first opened its doors to Nonconformist students. The intricate capitals of its pillars, each uniquely carved by Henry Frith to represent twelve different English plants, add a distinctive botanical flourish to the sacred space. Inside, visitors can also admire beautiful stained-glass windows, including one in the East Gallery featuring English wildflowers, a poignant memorial to the Reverend Maunder who was to be its first minister but sadly passed away before the church's completion. The church continues a legacy that began with John and Charles Wesley's 'Holy Club' in Oxford, a small group that blossomed into the worldwide Methodist movement.
More than just a historical monument, Wesley Memorial remains a vibrant hub of activity and worship in the heart of Oxford. The church and its adjoining modern atrium, which connects to the halls, are typically open to visitors Monday to Saturday, with no admission charge, offering a welcoming space for quiet reflection, prayer, or simply to admire its features. It hosts a wide array of community events, from coffee mornings and play cafes to concerts and seasonal fayres, reflecting its ongoing commitment to being an inclusive and justice-seeking church. Regular Sunday services attract a diverse congregation, including many students and visitors from around the globe, drawn to this significant site in Methodist history and its continuing open-armed welcome.
