Details

A journey through Oxford's past begins within the ancient walls of Oxford Castle and Prison, where over 1,000 years of history unfold. Costumed guides lead you through the site's remarkable transformation, from its Norman origins as a motte-and-bailey castle built for William the Conqueror around 1071, to its long-standing role as a formidable prison that only closed its doors in 1996. You'll descend into the atmospheric 900-year-old crypt, the only surviving part of St. George's Chapel, a place rumoured to be connected to the very beginnings of Oxford's famed education and even legends of King Arthur. Explore the austere confines of the 18th-century Debtors' Tower and the formidable Prison D-Wing, where tales of infamous inmates and the harsh realities of historical justice come to life.

Climb the historic St. George's Tower, believed to be a Saxon structure and one of Oxford's oldest buildings, for breathtaking panoramic views across the city's famous dreaming spires. Then, venture up the 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle mound for another perspective of this significant site, which has witnessed sieges, housed royalty, and served as a centre of justice for centuries. Beyond the guided tour, you can delve deeper into the site's more recent history in the exhibition wing. The castle and prison complex offers a truly immersive experience, revealing stories of everything from medieval battles to the lives of prisoners, including children, and the evolution of crime and punishment.

Mostly prison as most of the castle was demolished. The tour guide (in full period costume) was excellent, and all the staff I encountered were similar. 101 stairs in a tight spiral to the top of the tower might be a challenge for some. Its an interesting tour but an eclectic collection of themes.

Great visit to Oxford castle. Being a local it’s great to learn so much history. Willow our guide was great. She’s brilliant at explaining what you are seeing and some of what you are not seeing. Well worth the visit.

Well worth a visit, not as much to see as you would think as there's alot been lost through time. But what is there to see is worth taking a guided tour for and hearing its history.

not a bad way to spend an hour, the tour covers some history, a trip up the tower and cells. you will need to be mobile to navigate the twisty stairs.
the view from tower is great, the mound isnt worth the entry fee alone, but as part of the package it's worth a wander up
