Details

A striking neoclassical building on St Giles', the main thoroughfare in Oxford, the Taylor Institution immediately impresses with its Ionic columns and statuary representing the great European languages. Designed by Charles Robert Cockerell and completed in 1844, it stands as a historic landmark, purpose-built following a bequest from architect Sir Robert Taylor to establish a centre for teaching and improving European languages. This institution, often referred to as the Taylorian, serves as the University of Oxford's distinguished hub for the study of medieval and modern European languages and literatures, a role it has cultivated since its formal establishment in 1845. Its creation marked a significant step in broadening the University's curriculum beyond classical studies at the time.

As an integral part of the renowned Bodleian Libraries, the Taylor Institution Library houses one of the most significant collections in the UK dedicated to modern European languages, encompassing French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and other Slavic languages. While primarily a research library for students and scholars of the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, the Taylorian sometimes offers access to visitors for specific events, such as exhibitions held in the Voltaire Room or pre-arranged tours. These occasions provide a glimpse into its rich holdings, which include rare books and extensive critical works, contributing to its vibrant academic life and its mission to foster a deeper understanding of European cultures. Visitors should always check the Bodleian Libraries' website for the most current information on public access and events.

Fantastic library and a wonderful place to study. It gets very busy during term time. it's usually full by 9.30am. Get there early, go up the spiral staircase and grab a desk on the upper landing. Very private and great views.
