The striking 18th-century Radcliffe Observatory, modelled on the Tower of the Winds in Athens, forms the magnificent centrepiece of Green Templeton College on Woodstock Road. This iconic Grade I listed structure once played a vital role in astronomical studies, notably in observing the 1769 transit of Venus. Though a relatively young college, formed in 2008 by the merger of Green College and Templeton College, Green Templeton has a rich heritage. Its grounds also include the beautiful Osler-McGovern Centre at 13 Norham Gardens, a Victorian house once known as 'The Open Arms' for its welcoming atmosphere to scholars worldwide. Visitors should note that access to the college is generally by appointment.
Surrounding the impressive observatory, the college's three-acre site boasts beautifully kept gardens, offering a tranquil escape. These include a medicinal and herb garden, a nod to the college's strong connections with medical sciences, and a garden of ancient Greece incorporating Coade stone relics from the Observatory. Green Templeton College is primarily a graduate college with a focus on human welfare, social sciences, medicine, and business. The college fosters an active and engaged intellectual approach, building on the legacies of Green College's pioneering medical and social science work and Templeton College's expertise in management education. Future developments aim to enhance facilities with new student accommodation and social spaces, built to high sustainability standards.
