Situated on St Cross Road, Linacre College offers a unique atmosphere as the UK's first graduate society founded in 1962 for both sexes and all subjects. Named after the distinguished Renaissance humanist Thomas Linacre, the college reflects his broad intellectual interests and maintains a strikingly international character, with most of its members hailing from outside the UK, representing over 133 countries. The main college site, acquired in 1977, is Cherwell Edge, a Queen Anne style building that was once a private home and a convent. This historic structure is complemented by newer accommodation blocks like the Bamborough (1986), Abraham (1995), and Griffiths (2008) buildings, all designed to harmonise with the original architecture using a "Linacre College Special Blend Brick".
Visitors interested in academic events might be drawn to Linacre's long-standing tradition of public lectures; since 1991, the Linacre Lectures have notably focused on environmental challenges, attracting distinguished speakers. The college is known for its informal and egalitarian ethos, where students and fellows share the same common room, fostering a strong sense of community. While general visits to Linacre College are by appointment only, its location bordering University Parks and the University Science Area makes it a pleasant point of interest on a walk through Oxford's academic heartland. The college also has a reputation for its commitment to sustainability, evident in the environmental design of buildings like the Abraham Building, which was named UK Green Building of the Year in 1996.
