Nestled in Norham Gardens and stretching to the banks of the River Cherwell, Lady Margaret Hall boasts twelve acres of tranquil grounds and distinctive period architecture. Founded in 1878, it holds the distinction of being the first Oxford college to educate women, opening its doors to an initial cohort of nine students in 1879. This pioneering spirit continued when it became one of the first women's colleges to admit men in 1979. Visitors can freely explore the college daily between 10:00 and 17:00, discovering a landscape that includes a punt house, topiary, and herbaceous borders. The college's notable structures include the Byzantine-style Chapel and the Deneke residential wing, both designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in the 1930s.
The serene gardens offer a contrast of formal and informal areas, with spaces that invite quiet contemplation and discovery. From traditional quadrangles to more unexpected, quirky corners, the grounds reflect a creative and open-minded vision. The Fellows' Garden provides a more secluded, formal space, while the woodland area at the bottom of the gardens, overlooking the River Cherwell, offers a lush green canopy and stunning light, especially beautiful in spring when daffodils and snowdrops abound. Lady Margaret Hall's rich history and beautiful setting provide a welcoming environment, continuing its legacy as a forward-thinking institution with notable alumni including Benazir Bhutto, Nigella Lawson, and Malala Yousafzai.
