Details

The distinctive name of Brasenose College, founded in 1509, is believed to derive from a bronze or brass door knocker shaped like a nose. This very "brazen nose" can now be found hanging above the high table in the college's dining hall, a quirky testament to centuries of history. The college, with its main entrance facing the iconic Radcliffe Camera, boasts a stunning mix of architectural styles across its Old Quad, Deer Park, and New Quad. Its chapel, a remarkable blend of Gothic and Baroque design consecrated in 1666, features a striking fan vault ceiling. Brasenose also lays claim to one of the oldest rowing clubs in the world, the Brasenose College Boat Club, which participated in the earliest recorded inter-club boat race in 1815.

Visitors to Brasenose can soak in the atmosphere of a college that has nurtured notable figures such as former Prime Minister David Cameron, author William Golding ("Lord of the Flies"), and Monty Python's Michael Palin. The college is renowned for its friendly atmosphere, often referred to as the "Brasenose Spirit," which embodies mutual support and inclusiveness. While exploring the historic quads and chapel, guests get a glimpse into the vibrant student life that includes a renowned annual summer arts festival. Brasenose is generally open to visitors, often free of charge though donations are welcomed, with specific hours typically available for viewing the college's stunning architecture and absorbing its rich academic heritage.

A friendly and caring ancient institution with high academic standards. Its connection with alumni continues for decades and is highly valued. The College’s position on the stunning architectural ensemble of Radcliffe Square close to the Bodleian Library is a definite bonus.

Easily one of my favorite Oxford colleges. Brasenose offers a wonderful view of the adjacent camera and University church. I particularly like the college bar, dining hall, and library. The chapel is also a nice and peaceful place. Make sure you find a student to take you inside for free 😉

The Brasenose College is a most enchanting part in the universe of the University of Oxford.

Very rich on history and with remarkable personalities, this place still gives you this feeling of getting lost in time. What here ... is a very good thing.

The architecture and gardening is exactly as I expected it to be.

We were so fortunate to spend the night in Brasenose College rooms. We looked out onto the immaculate, beautiful interior quad and saw the Radcliffe beyond. The porters were helpful and friendly. Whether you're applying to Brasenose or just a Morse fan, spend the night there. You'll never forget it.
