Details

Hertford College's most instantly recognisable feature, its "Bridge of Sighs," gracefully arches over New College Lane, connecting the old and new quadrangles of this historic Oxford institution. Though officially named the Hertford Bridge, its picturesque resemblance to its Venetian counterpart cemented its popular nickname and made it a beloved city landmark, completed in 1914 by architect Sir Thomas Jackson. The college's origins are ancient, tracing back to Hart Hall in the 1280s, before eventually becoming Hertford College in 1740, and then being re-founded in 1874 after a period of dissolution. This rich, layered history is palpable as you view its striking architecture from Catte Street, directly opposite the main gate to the Bodleian Library.

While the bridge often steals the show, Hertford College offers a surprisingly intimate atmosphere despite its central location. The college is comprised of three main quadrangles – Old, New, and Holywell – which house its vibrant academic community of around 600 students. The Old Quadrangle features a gatehouse with 17th-century wooden doors and the Old Hall dating from the 1570s. The Chapel, another of Thomas Graham Jackson's designs and considered by him to be his finest work, was completed in 1908. Although tourist access to the interiors is generally restricted, the college’s beautiful facades and its famous bridge are easily admired from the surrounding streets, forming an essential part of any visitor's Oxford experience.
