Nestled on the eastern bank of the River Cherwell, St. Hilda's College offers a unique perspective of Oxford, looking out towards the famed Botanic Gardens and the historic city skyline. Founded in 1893 by Dorothea Beale as a hall for women, it was the last of Oxford's women's colleges to become co-educational in 2008, now welcoming students and fellows of all genders. The college's grounds are a delightful blend of the traditional and the modern, with notable buildings such as the original Cowley House, now known as Hall, and the award-winning Anniversary Building completed more recently. Visitors will find its location particularly convenient, being the only Oxford college east of the Cherwell yet only a short walk from the city centre and Magdalen Bridge.
The gardens themselves are a prime asset, stretching along the river and featuring a rich tapestry of perennial plants, majestic old trees, and a wildflower meadow, creating a tranquil and biodiverse space. Within these beautiful grounds sits the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, a purpose-built concert hall renowned for its intimate atmosphere and superb acoustics, named in memory of the celebrated cellist and honorary fellow. This venue hosts a vibrant programme of recitals and concerts, including performances by world-renowned musicians and family-friendly events. The college also boasts its own fleet of punts, available for students to use, adding to the idyllic riverside experience. Recent redevelopments have further enhanced the college, creating a new sense of place and connecting different parts of the estate, all while respecting its picturesque setting.
