Details

Founded in 1427 by Richard Fleming, Bishop of Lincoln, this college retains more of a 15th-century architectural character than perhaps any other in Oxford. Its Turl Street façade and front quad still predominantly feature two-storey buildings, offering an authentic glimpse into medieval Oxford. The college boasts three distinct quadrangles: the 15th-century Front Quad, the Chapel Quad dating from 1608-1631, and the 19th-century Grove. One of Lincoln's most striking features is its library, housed in the converted 18th-century All Saints Church, the tower of which is a prominent "dreaming spire" on the Oxford skyline. Remarkably, the college also possesses one of the oldest working medieval kitchens in the UK.

Step into the Chapel Quad and you'll find the exquisite 17th-century chapel, built between 1629 and 1631 on the site of a former bowling alley. Its interior has remained largely unchanged and features some of the finest painted glass windows in Oxford, the work of Abraham van Linge, alongside a cedarwood screen and a portable 17th-century pulpit. Lincoln College was also a significant location for John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who was a fellow here in the 18th century and held meetings of his 'Holy Club' within its walls. The Wesley Room, believed to be where he resided, has been restored with period furnishings. Look out for the Boston ivy in the Front Quad, a much-loved feature by many.

Just dropping my daughter off for the start of term. Exempt from parking restrictions on Turl Street. Room in the Mitre very adequate.
