Cornmarket St.

Details

The 14th-century timber-framed building at 26-28 Cornmarket Street, once the New Inn, offers a tangible connection to Oxford's medieval past. This pedestrianised thoroughfare, historically a vital market route for corn and grain traders, now buzzes with a lively mix of high-street brands, department stores, and independent shops. At its southern end, the Carfax Tower, a remnant of the 13th-century St. Martin's Church, provides panoramic views of the city's famed skyline for those who climb its 99 steps. Hidden just off the main street, the Golden Cross arcade, a former medieval inn, now houses charming small shops and cafes within its historic courtyard, leading towards the Covered Market. Cornmarket Street effortlessly blends its rich history with modern commerce, making it a central hub for any Oxford exploration.

At the northern end of Cornmarket Street stands St Michael at the North Gate, Oxford's oldest building, with its Saxon tower dating back to around 1040-1050. This church was once part of the city's original northern defences and today serves as the ceremonial City Church of Oxford. Inside, visitors can see the cell door from the former Bocardo Prison that held the Oxford Martyrs before their execution in the 16th century. The street itself, a pedestrian precinct since 1999, is not just a shopping destination but a vibrant stage for street performers, adding to its energetic atmosphere. Whether you're browsing the shops in the Clarendon Shopping Centre, grabbing a coffee, or simply soaking up the city's unique blend of ancient and contemporary life, Cornmarket offers a quintessential Oxford experience.
