Spanning 117 hectares on the southern slopes of Shotover Hill, this country park offers spectacular views across south Oxfordshire and a rich tapestry of hidden valleys, varied landscapes, and diverse habitats. Once part of a Royal Forest used for hunting by noblemen, Shotover has evolved through centuries, serving as a source of timber for Oxford's historic buildings and later as open farmland. Today, it’s a sanctuary for wildlife, with ancient woodlands carpeted in bluebells each spring, alongside flowery meadows, marshes, and heathlands that support a wealth of creatures. Birdwatchers might spot green woodpeckers, while the bracken-covered slopes offer cover to foxes, muntjac, and roe deer. The park even features a natural sandpit, a popular spot for children, easily found by following the red trail.
With a network of paths and bridleways, Shotover Country Park is ideal for a leisurely stroll, a challenging hike, cycling, or horse riding. Three waymarked trails of varying lengths guide visitors through its diverse scenery, all starting from Mary Sadler's Field near the car park. This field is also a good spot for kite-flying. Historically, the main road to London once traversed Shotover Plain, a route familiar to highwaymen and even Charles Wesley, who was reportedly mugged here. The park is free to enter and open year-round, providing an accessible escape for picnics, dog walking, jogging, or simply enjoying the peaceful countryside on Oxford's doorstep.
