Details

Situated on Beaumont Street, directly opposite the renowned Ashmolean Museum, the Oxford Playhouse has been a cornerstone of the city's cultural life since its current building, designed by Edward Maufe, opened in 1938. This 663-seat theatre, built as a repertory venue and the last new theatre completed before the Second World War, has a rich history of showcasing a wide array of performances. Over the decades, its stage has been graced by legendary actors such as Judi Dench, John Gielgud, Ian McKellen, and Maggie Smith, as well as student performers like Rowan Atkinson and Michael Palin who found early success here. Though it faced financial challenges and a temporary closure in 1987, the Playhouse reopened in 1991 after significant refurbishment and continues to thrive.

Today, the Oxford Playhouse offers a vibrant and diverse programme that includes compelling British and international drama, captivating family shows, contemporary dance, a spectrum of musical performances, and thought-provoking lectures. It also serves as a producing house, creating its own shows and hosting artists in residence. The theatre maintains strong connections with the University of Oxford, frequently staging productions by the Oxford University Dramatic Society and managing the nearby 50-seat Burton Taylor Studio. Committed to community engagement, the Playhouse's learning team connects with thousands annually through workshops, post-show discussions, and youth theatre programmes, ensuring its legacy as a vital artistic hub for all ages.

Enjoyed the night out recently when went to see the production of The King Reggae - The Music featuring Bob Marley's iconic hits.
Unlike older theatres, this theatre has no special attractive interior features to mention, however, its well laid out with spacious seats.

Lots of public parking nearby so easy to get to. The seating is comfy and plenty of legroom. A few different places to get a drink at intervals
