Details

Opened back in 1774, the historic Oxford Covered Market was originally conceived to house local butchers and clear the main streets of untidy stalls. Today, this Grade II listed building, designed by John Gwynn who also planned Magdalen Bridge, thrives as a bustling hub for over 50 independent traders right in the city centre. You'll find a vibrant mix of traditional market shops, including butchers still producing the famous Oxford sausage, alongside artisan grocers, fresh produce, and fishmongers. The market has continually evolved, surviving through centuries and even undergoing expansions in the 19th century, with some of its original architectural features like cast iron roofs and meat hooks still visible. It remains a cornerstone of Oxford's commercial and cultural life, celebrated for its unique atmosphere and its support of local businesses.

Wander through its charming alleyways and discover an array of treasures, from boutique clothing, unique gifts, and jewellery to flowers, books, and handmade crafts. The aroma of freshly baked goods from artisan bakeries and the sight of colourful cakes will tempt your taste buds, while buzzing cafes offer a perfect spot to relax and soak in the lively atmosphere. Many of these businesses are family-owned, passed down through generations, offering a personal and bespoke shopping experience. In recent years, the market has extended its hours on Thursdays to Saturdays, sometimes featuring live music or comedy. With ongoing regeneration plans, this cherished Oxford institution is set to continue as a vibrant destination for both locals and visitors for years to come.

The market is a nice historic spot in the heart of Oxford, dating back to 1774. As a Grade II listed building, it beautifully blends history with a lively shopping experience. The variety of stalls and shops, from butchers selling Oxford sausage to bakeries, greengrocers, and unique gift stores, makes it an interesting place to explore.

The market has a welcoming atmosphere, and the recent renovations by Oxford City Council have improved its facilities while preserving its historic charm. With multiple entrances, it’s easy to access and a convenient stop while exploring the city.

The downside is that the number of businesses has declined over the years, and some areas could use a bit more variety. That said, it's still a good place to visit for fresh food, gifts, and a taste of Oxford’s history!

A nice area, and a good place to walk round,
The only thing, not much variety, a large percentage is taken up by cafes and eating outlets.
Only really nipped in Browns so missus could say she's eaten where they filmed

We stopped by the Covered Market out of curiosity, and while it’s a charming and historic space, the actual shop selection did not quite live up to the hype. It was fun to walk through and take in the atmosphere—definitely quaint—but most of the stores just did not feel all that appealing to us.

Worth a quick stroll if you’re nearby, but not a must-see unless you’re specifically hunting for something niche.

The market is situated in the center of Oxford. It's very nice to visit where you can buy different food, sweets or drinks, but you also find clothes, jewerly and clothing accesories. The market is among the oldest markets in the country. Well worth visiting if you explore the city. Great place for lunch or just pop in find a tasty take away and coffee or tea and get back to explore the streets of Oxford.
