Opened back in 1774, the historic Oxford Covered Market was originally conceived to house local butchers and clear the main streets of untidy stalls. Today, this Grade II listed building, designed by John Gwynn who also planned Magdalen Bridge, thrives as a bustling hub for over 50 independent traders right in the city centre. You'll find a vibrant mix of traditional market shops, including butchers still producing the famous Oxford sausage, alongside artisan grocers, fresh produce, and fishmongers. The market has continually evolved, surviving through centuries and even undergoing expansions in the 19th century, with some of its original architectural features like cast iron roofs and meat hooks still visible. It remains a cornerstone of Oxford's commercial and cultural life, celebrated for its unique atmosphere and its support of local businesses.
Wander through its charming alleyways and discover an array of treasures, from boutique clothing, unique gifts, and jewellery to flowers, books, and handmade crafts. The aroma of freshly baked goods from artisan bakeries and the sight of colourful cakes will tempt your taste buds, while buzzing cafes offer a perfect spot to relax and soak in the lively atmosphere. Many of these businesses are family-owned, passed down through generations, offering a personal and bespoke shopping experience. In recent years, the market has extended its hours on Thursdays to Saturdays, sometimes featuring live music or comedy. With ongoing regeneration plans, this cherished Oxford institution is set to continue as a vibrant destination for both locals and visitors for years to come.
