A herd of pedigree Old English Longhorn cattle graze contentedly on the expansive college grasslands of Christ Church Meadow, a serene green haven in the heart of Oxford, owned by Christ Church College. This tranquil space traces its origins to medieval times when it was the property of St. Frideswide's Priory, later playing a defensive role during the English Civil War. Today, a largely flat, two-mile circular path winds past magnificent college buildings and along the banks of the Rivers Thames (known locally as the Isis) and Cherwell, offering picturesque views of Oxford's famous skyline. It's an ideal spot for a leisurely walk, quiet reflection, or a delightful picnic, with free entry generally from dawn till dusk throughout the year.
Open to the public and carefully managed by the college, the Meadow is a cherished part of Oxford's cultural and social fabric, accessible from St Aldate's (OX1 1DP) and Merton Street. Visitors can learn about the area's unique flora, fauna, and captivating past by following the Meadow Trail. The college boat houses become particularly lively during rowing events like Eights Week and Torpids, adding to the vibrant atmosphere by the river. While access to the Meadow itself is free, it's worth noting that entry to Christ Church College and its historic cathedral may require a separate admission fee. From summer's lush greens to winter's crisp charm, the Meadow offers a uniquely beautiful Oxford experience in every season.
