Follow the Megalosaurus footprints across the front lawn into a magnificent neo-Gothic building, where towering dinosaur skeletons dominate the central court beneath a stunning, recently restored glass roof supported by cast iron pillars resembling tree branches. Opened in 1860, the Oxford University Museum of Natural History houses zoology, entomology, and geology collections, including the world-famous Oxford Dodo – the only surviving soft tissue remains of this extinct bird – and the first scientifically described dinosaur, the Megalosaurus. Intricate stone columns, each crafted from a different British stone, line the cloistered arcades of this architectural marvel, inspired by John Ruskin's writings. With over seven million objects, from meteorites as old as the solar system to a live bee colony, discoveries await around every corner.
Recently updated exhibits, part of the 'Life, as we know it' project, delve into biodiversity, evolution, and ecosystems with new taxidermy, models, and striking glass sculptures, offering fresh insights into the natural world. This vibrant, free-entry museum is an engaging day out for all ages, with family trails, touchable exhibits including a fox and bears, and special "Animals On The Move" tours for under 5s. The bright and airy space with wide aisles is easy to navigate, and you can extend your exploration into anthropology and archaeology by visiting the adjoining Pitt Rivers Museum. Afterwards, enjoy a picnic on the lawn or visit the 'Eat the Future' café, which offers sustainable meals with a view of the dinosaurs.

Highly recommended for a day out in Oxford!
The Oxford University Museum of Natural History is an absolute delight! The building itself is stunning, and the collection inside is just as impressive. From towering dinosaur skeletons to beautiful geological displays, there’s so much to see and learn.
The exhibits are well laid out and informative, making it easy to explore at your own pace. I was especially excited to see the dodo — but sadly, it wasn’t on display during my visit. Still, there was so much else to enjoy that it didn’t take away from the experience.
If you’re in Oxford, this museum is definitely worth a visit!
