Details

Britain's first public museum, the Ashmolean, has stood on Beaumont Street since 1683, a cornerstone of Oxford's cultural landscape. Inside, an unparalleled journey through human creativity awaits, initiated by Elias Ashmole's vision to expand knowledge. You can witness one of the most significant collections of Egyptian mummies and pre-Dynastic sculptures outside Cairo, offering profound insights into ancient lives. Art enthusiasts will be captivated by the world's largest collection of Raphael drawings, alongside masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Turner. Iconic artefacts such as the Alfred Jewel, Lawrence of Arabia's ceremonial dress, and Guy Fawkes' lantern provide tangible connections to pivotal historical moments and remarkable individuals, making each gallery a testament to our shared global heritage and the enduring power of human ingenuity.

The Ashmolean experience continues with its world-class temporary exhibitions; you can currently explore "Anselm Kiefer: Early Works" (until June 15, 2025), a landmark survey of the renowned artist's formative period. Later in the year, "This Is What You Get: Stanley Donwood, Radiohead, Thom Yorke" (from August 8, 2025) will offer a fascinating look at the intersection of visual art and music. The museum building itself is an architectural marvel, blending classical grandeur with modern finesse. Families can enjoy interactive trails and activity packs designed for all ages. Conclude your cultural immersion with a visit to the rooftop restaurant, offering stunning panoramic views of Oxford, or find a unique keepsake in the museum shop. With free admission to its main collections, the Ashmolean is an unmissable destination.

An absolutely fascinating museum that exceeded all expectations! The Ashmolean’s blend of ancient history and fine art is world-class. I was particularly mesmerized by the Ancient Egyptian gallery—the wall carvings and sarcophagus paintings were stunningly preserved and beautifully lit, giving a real sense of the grandeur and symbolism of ancient times.

The museum layout is intuitive, with helpful signage (like the one photographed) guiding you through themed sections from the Ancient World and Asian Crossroads to European art. I especially appreciated the Stradivarius violin exhibit—seeing “The Rode” from 1722 and an even older Amati violin from 1564 was a rare treat for any music lover.

The Ashmolean also does a great job balancing educational content with visual appeal. There's no entry fee, which makes it even more accessible, and the café is a great place to unwind afterward.

Whether you're into archaeology, fine instruments, or world art traditions, this museum has something that will leave you in awe.

Fabulous place. Perhaps my favorite museum of all! Perfect expositions with a variety of collections yet you do not feel overwhelmed. The architecture and interior design of the museum itself deserve a prize — with every walk I was in awe of what I saw. And the entrance is free for everyone, anytime making it accessible for all. Bravo!!

Beautiful museum filled with so much information & amazing displays. Very relaxed atmosphere & staff were happy & friendly. You can easily spend a good day wondering the floors enjoying everything from Ancient Egypt to Ancient China, oil on Canvas artworks & beautiful sculptures. The Chinese pottery & ceramics collection is absolutely beautiful. There is a small shop where you can purchase momentoes & books, also clean toilets & a nice cafe.

For £ 8,10 entry as a student, I visited the Ashmolean museum the Saturday before Easter Sunday. It closes a bit earlier (5pm) on that specific day but otherwise the experience was brilliant. I enjoyed the variety of art and different cultures displayed in the museum. There are good floor plans on every floor and each exhibit is numbered quite clearly. The only thing that I would have appreciated would have been a free map to carry around. There are some available in exchange for a 2£ donation though. I especially liked the Japanese exhibition and room 62. There are benches or seats in most exhibitions which allow for rests or people to sit and sketch. The museum staff were very friendly and open to questions. I especially liked the young man in room 62 and the member of staff with two nice bows in her hair. Thank you for the wonderful afternoon. I Would definitely recommend visiting this museum.
