The Castle, a historic pub-restaurant dating back to 1892, stands proudly on Paradise Street, exuding Victorian allure with its distinctive mock-Tudor features and tall red-brick chimney stacks. Situated in the vibrant heart of Oxford city centre, this charming establishment offers a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere that effortlessly combines traditional beer-house character with a lively, social buzz. It particularly stands out as Hook Norton Brewery's first Oxford city centre pub, offering a genuine neighbourhood feel for both locals and visitors alike.
The cuisine at The Castle focuses on classic British pub fare, featuring hearty and comforting dishes prepared fresh to order. Signature options include the slow-braised steak & ale pie, crafted with Old Hooky ale, alongside traditional roast-potato lamb hotpot and the ever-popular Hooky beer-battered cod with chips. To complement the meal, a wide selection of cask ales from Hook Norton Brewery is available, alongside lagers, wines, and spirits, with tempting desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and apple & blackberry crumble providing a thoroughly British offering.
This friendly venue is ideal for a casual lunch, a hearty dinner, or simply popping in for drinks with friends, catering equally well to families and those with dogs, as it is a dog-friendly establishment. With a consistently informal yet lively atmosphere, it is perfectly suited for relaxed gatherings. The Castle also hosts a weekly entertainment schedule, including live music and comedy nights, making it a great choice for a varied evening out and is available for private hire for parties and functions.

We found this place by chance and didn't regret it. Even though it's downtown, it's very quiet and peaceful. Great and friendly staff.
